    Voltage Unbalance, Power Factor and Losses Optimization in Electrified Railways Using an Electronic Balancer

    Unbalanced currents, low power factor and high losses contribute to increasing the bill infrastructure managers must pay to the TSO/DSO operator that supplies electric energy to the railway system. Additionally, if regenerative energy coming from braking regimes is not allowed to be injected into the grid or even is penalized when it occurs, then the optimization of those parameters must be pursued. One of the possible measures that can be taken to counteract those phenomena is the installation of electronic balancers in heavy loaded substations in order to optimize the interface to the three-phase electric grid. This paper shows the benefit of such use taking examples from real conditions and realistic simulations assumed equivalent to field measurements

    Calcinosis is a rare condition described in pets. It is characterized mainly by calcium deposition in the skin of multifactorial aetiology that ranges from dystrophic, metastatic, idiopathic to iatrogenic origin (Scott et al., 2001, Gross et al., 2005) . Subdivide in calcinosis cutis and calcinosis circumscripta (Gross et al. 2005).     Microfluidic devices as gas – Ionic liquid membrane contactors for CO2 removal from anaesthesia gases

    This work proposes a microfluidic gas – ionic liquid contactor for CO2 removal from anaesthesia gas, containing Xe. The working principle involves the transport of CO2 through a polymer flat membrane followed by its capture and enzymatic bioconversion in the ionic liquid solvent. Microfluidic devices enable a rapid and inexpensive screening of potential CO2 absorbers. The alveolar – type design of the ionic liquid chamber was adopted to reduce mass transfer limitations of CO2 through the liquid phase. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was the chosen polymer for dense membrane, as well as for the microfluidic device fabrication, mainly due to the high permeability of gases, O2 and CO2, and low cost. The selected ionic liquid was cholinium propionate (CP) with a water activity of 0.753, due to its high affinity towards CO2 and biocompatibility with the enzyme used for CO2 conversion to bicarbonate, carbonic anhydrase (CA). The CO2 and Xe permeability and CO2/Xe selectivity were determined in the microfluidic devices developed and compared to those exhibited by free standing PDMS membranes mounted on a standard permeation cell. The performance of the microfluidic devices as gas – ionic liquid contactors was evaluated for a given solvent flow rate with pure gas streams of CO2 and Xe. The obtained results show that cholinium propionate with or without the enzyme has no effect on the Xe transport, but remarkably enhances the affinity towards carbon dioxide leading to enhancement factor up to 1.9 in the presence of 0.1 mg CA/gIL

    evALLution: making basic evolution concepts accessible to people with visual impairment through a multisensory tree of life

    Background:- People with visual impairment have benefitted from recent developments of assistive technology that aim to decrease socio-economic inequality. However, access to post-secondary education is still extremelly challenging, especially for scientific areas. The under representation of people with visual impairment in the evolution research community is connected with the vision-based communication of evolutionary biology knowledge and the accompanying lack of multisensory alternatives for learning. Results:- Here, we describe the development of an inclusive outreach activity based on a multisensory phylogeny representing 20 taxonomic groups. We provide a tool kit of materials and ideas that allow both the replication of this activity and the adaptation of others, to include people with visual impairment. Furthermore, we provide activity evaluation data, a discussion of the lessons learned and an inclusive description of all figures and visual data presented. The presented baseline data show that people with visual impairment indeed have lack of access to education but are interested in and apt to understand evolutionary biology concepts and predict evolutionary change when education is inclusive. Conclusions:- We show that, with creative investment, basic evolutionary knowledge is perfectly possible to be transmitted through multisensory activities, which everyone can benefit from. Ultimately, we hope this case study will provide a baseline for future initiatives and a more inclusive outreach community

    Measurements of Higgs boson production and couplings in diboson final states with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

    Measurements are presented of production properties and couplings of the recently discovered Higgs boson using the decays into boson pairs, H →γ γ, H → Z Z∗ →4l and H →W W∗ →lνlν. The results are based on the complete pp collision data sample recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider at centre-of-mass energies of √s = 7 TeV and √s = 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 25 fb−1. Evidence for Higgs boson production through vector-boson fusion is reported. Results of combined fits probing Higgs boson couplings to fermions and bosons, as well as anomalous contributions to loop-induced production and decay modes, are presented. All measurements are consistent with expectations for the Standard Model Higgs boson

    Standalone vertex finding in the ATLAS muon spectrometer

    A dedicated reconstruction algorithm to find decay vertices in the ATLAS muon spectrometer is presented. The algorithm searches the region just upstream of or inside the muon spectrometer volume for multi-particle vertices that originate from the decay of particles with long decay paths. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated using both a sample of simulated Higgs boson events, in which the Higgs boson decays to long-lived neutral particles that in turn decay to bbar b final states, and pp collision data at √s = 7 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC during 2011

    Measurement of the top quark pair cross section with ATLAS in pp collisions at √s=7 TeV using final states with an electron or a muon and a hadronically decaying τ lepton

    A measurement of the cross section of top quark pair production in proton-proton collisions recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV is reported. The data sample used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.05 fb -1. Events with an isolated electron or muon and a τ lepton decaying hadronically are used. In addition, a large missing transverse momentum and two or more energetic jets are required. At least one of the jets must be identified as originating from a b quark. The measured cross section, σtt-=186±13(stat.)±20(syst.)±7(lumi.) pb, is in good agreement with the Standard Model prediction

    Measurement of the top quark-pair production cross section with ATLAS in pp collisions at \sqrt{s}=7\TeV

    A measurement of the production cross-section for top quark pairs(\ttbar) in pppp collisions at \sqrt{s}=7 \TeV is presented using data recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Events are selected in two different topologies: single lepton (electron ee or muon μ\mu) with large missing transverse energy and at least four jets, and dilepton (eeee, μμ\mu\mu or eμe\mu) with large missing transverse energy and at least two jets. In a data sample of 2.9 pb-1, 37 candidate events are observed in the single-lepton topology and 9 events in the dilepton topology. The corresponding expected backgrounds from non-\ttbar Standard Model processes are estimated using data-driven methods and determined to be 12.2±3.912.2 \pm 3.9 events and 2.5±0.62.5 \pm 0.6 events, respectively. The kinematic properties of the selected events are consistent with SM \ttbar production. The inclusive top quark pair production cross-section is measured to be \sigmattbar=145 \pm 31 ^{+42}_{-27} pb where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.
